MONOFILAMENT RECYCLING

Protecting Our Oceans with Monofilament Recycling

Fishing line, or monofilament, is a vital tool for anglers, but when left in the environment, it can harm marine life and ecosystems. At Anglers for Conservation, we teach children the importance of monofilament recycling to keep our oceans clean and safe. Through engaging workshops, hands-on activities, and community initiatives, our volunteers inspire young anglers to take an active role in protecting the marine environment they love.

KNOWLEDGE MATTERS

Why Monofilament Recycling Matters

Discarded fishing line can entangle marine animals, damage coral reefs, and pollute waterways. Entanglement in fishing line is the main cause of stranding of marine species like manatees, sea lions, seals, dolphins, sea turtles, & whales. Our program educates children about the environmental impact of monofilament and empowers them to make a difference. Kids learn how recycling fishing line prevents harm to marine life, fish, birds, and other wildlife, and how it contributes to healthier oceans. Through interactive discussions and real-world examples, we show them that small actions can have a big impact!

How Can You Help?

Bin

Find a Bin!

Recycle fishing line in bin locations across the state.

Bag

Come Prepared

Bring a container with a lid to store plastic bags or used fishing line.

Hands

Use Your Hands!

Collect any plastic items or fishing line you see.

HANDS-ON RECYCLING

Building Collection Stations

To make recycling fun and meaningful, our volunteers guide children in creating monofilament collection stations. These stations, often made from simple materials like PVC pipes, are placed at popular fishing spots to encourage anglers to dispose of used line responsibly. Kids participate in building and decorating these stations, learning:

  • How to properly collect and sort used fishing line
  • The process of sending collected monofilament to recycling facilities
  • How recycled line is transformed into new products, like fishing gear or habitat structures

This hands-on activity fosters creativity and a sense of ownership in their conservation efforts.

HANDS ON LEARNING:

Spreading the Word: Get Involved with The Community !

Our program encourages children to become ambassadors for monofilament recycling. They learn how to educate their peers, families, and local anglers about the importance of recycling fishing line. Through group projects, such as designing posters or organizing community clean-up events, kids develop leadership skills and inspire others to join the cause.
